Second Quarter Reading

This really was not a very good quarter for reading for me. It feels like I spend hours every day reading with or to the kids, but somehow there's not enough hours in the day to get in more than a couple minutes of reading for me.

At the end of the first quarter, I had a pile of library books on my nightstand. I was really only interested in the chapter about teaching kids to talk in NutureShock, so I read that chapter and returned it to the library. (And after reading it, I kind of feel like it's a miracle Corbyn and Peyton ever learned to talk and worry Logan never will.) I finished two of those books (see below) and I'm more than halfway through the other (Lost in a Book), so I guess this quarter wasn't a total loss.

Great

1. Small Admissions by Amy Poeppel. Kate has spent the last year of her life wallowing after her almost-fiancĂ© dumps her. Things finally start to look up when Kate’s sister manages to get her a job interview in the admissions department of a ritzy private school in New York City and she lands the job despite bombing the interview. It's certainly not the best book ever, but it was light, fun, and enjoyable - and none of those are bad qualities in a book!

2. Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between) by Lauren Graham. I needed a juicy memoir for Modern Mrs. Darcy's 2017 Reading Challenge and when I saw this one on her list, I knew immediately I would read it since I loved Lauren Graham in Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. It was fun to read her thoughts about playing those roles and the journey she took to become an actress. And now I want to read her novel, Someday, Someday, Maybe.

3. How to Fight a Dragon's Fury by Cressida Cowell. Somehow I had it in my mind that there are 11 How to Train Your Dragon books. When we got to the end of book 11 and I realized there was actually a whole other book, I wasn't terribly excited because I was ready to be done with them. But then I ended up liking book 12 the most out of the whole series. It was a great way to wrap up the series.

Good

4. How to Betray a Dragon's Hero by Cressida Cowell. This book was setting up for the final book and I was getting impatient to be done with them. Since I thought this was the last book, I spent most of it wondering how it was all going to wrap up so quickly.

I also started reading chapter books to Peyton this quarter. I feel like they are too short to count toward my reading goal, but I'm including them for memory sake.

Cinderella Take the Stage by Tessa Roehl and Belle's Discovery by RH Disney. These new Disney Princess Beginnings books are just about the cutest books ever. They are about the princesses when they were little girls and just at the beginning of their stories. Belle was our favorite, but Cinderella was cute too. We're dying for Ariel to come out July 25th and Jasmine to come out September 5th. And I just saw that Tiana comes out January 2nd (of 2018)!

The Critter Club: Amy and the Missing Puppy by Callie Barkley. We read this after finishing Cinderella and Belle's stories and it was pretty cute, but suffered in comparison!

Now here's to hoping I can get us in a good summer routine that includes a little more reading time for me!

Thanks for reading to our kids. It will be a big blessing to them. Also, Logan doesn't need to learn to talk. His grunts and whines are working just fine for him.
